can anyone recommend some good books for an upper-level intermediate player? You know, a book with say the standard notation and a cd track(i haveto have the cd track cause my interpretation skills are weak) with each bass line on it(bass and drum only). To give you an idea of where im at, ive gone through chili peppers books, if i could hear the bass, i could play it, ive gone through anthony vitti books...way too easy, and ive spent about 10 minutes with ed friedland/bunny brunel books before i got bored/snobbed to death. Since ive always played rock i want to stretch out into classical and jazz, funk, maybe even tapping. But i cant seem to find the right material. any suggestions?(remember standard notation and bass drum track).

The Funkmasters. The Great James Brown Rhythm Sections. By Allan Slutsky and Chuck Silverman.

There are 23 songs and two CDs. In the book besides a bit of background notes, there are four scores (master, guitar, drums and bass). The master score is standard notation, while the individual scores have both standard and tab. Standard notation is done very well IMHO. This book would work well for a guitarist or a drummer.

The CD is setup the same way, a master track, then guitar, drum, bass individual tracks). On the individual tracks there's a metronome as well.

One nitpick I do have is that on the individual tracks a narrator announces the song, so I often load the track into GarageBand (or similar program) and loop the section of the track without the announcement (and countdown) in it.

They aren't entire songs, mostly 12 bars or so, and so sometimes once you've got a tune down, you wish the entire song was on the CD.

If nothing else the selections in the book will a) improve your timing and b) improve your speed.

I've got quite a few Funk books and this one clearly is the best as it's not just a bunch of 4-8bar riffs.
