branching out

For a long time now I've always played and jammed on metal, blues, and other music that is very riff driven. Id like to branch out into classical music, and jazz, but im rather overwhelmed at where to start, and searches about this stuff turn up with rather useless things to me, such as classical guitars, and jazz basses. Could somebody please point me to where I need to go or start, or at least tell me to search so I know the information is actually out there? Thanks in advance for any help.

for classical you would want to get a book from Mel Bay or Hal Leonard with peices or etudes arranged for bass.

Jazz is huge ....if you like blues start with some jazz blues songs ...they have more chords that you have to walk through ...there is no doubt a Jamie Abersold play along book and CD dedicated to jazz blues ....prolly other books on hal leonard and mel bay as well for that.

you can also get a book/cd on walking bass lines for jazz and then start listening to some swing standards like Satin Doll, Take the A train, Autumn Leaves etc....that's good stuff to start with!

I bought THe Art of Walking Bass from Musicians Institute Press for a resourse for students getting into it ...so i can recommend that...you can get that thru Hal Leonard as well.
