I spent the summer with a broken left wrist, many years ago. I picked up a cheapo bass to tide me over, practiced on it every day...(broken wrist, no work, lots of time on my hands). Contrary to what i thought, the cast didn't F*%k up the neck nearly as bad as I thought it would. I wound up flipping it for the same price I paid for it...food for thought.

I don't ready theory, so no help there...good luck getting through this.

You might want to check out the links in my sig. below. Lots of good theory links, among others.

I cracked my right wrist many years ago. With a cast and all, after about a couple of days or so, I felt good enough to start practicing again, I had to take it easy though. I lowered my bass and kept my right hand as straight as I could .

I broke mine in a motorcycle accident. A cast was put on, but it had so much plaster in the palm area, I couldn't play without scratching the neck. So I went back and had a thinner cast put on, and the cast shaped to fit the playing position (I took my bass with me to make sure- they used one of those air curing rosin casts), then glued some soft felt to the palm of the cast to protect the neck. Yeah, it hurt at first, but the pain lessened. I could not go without playing for six weeks- I was gigging with the cast on my hand four weeks after the crash....

Jaco broke his wrist when he was young. I think that's when he switched from drums to bass. So I guess I'm suggesting you read Jaco by Milkowski. It's a very good read.

they may very well encourage you to practice (taking it easy of course) in order to maximize potential movment, but. check with the doc and take it slow.

if you have enough mobility for a piano/keyboard its a good way to look at theory, and exercise fingers.......take it slow and easy

Man I am really sorry to hear that terrible news. Bad enough if you can't play, but if it will affect your day job too... wow. Hang in there and thoughts coming your way for a quick and complete recovery.

Yeah, check out all the links that Stumbo has in his sig. Tons of info, should keep you busy for a while.

I can't remember if he has a link to StudyBass so I added it just in case. Lots of good info there as well.

Here's a set of books that might help you out. We used them in my Fundamentals of Music course in college. "The Music Kit" fourth edition, by Tom Manoff.

My drummer fell asleep at the wheel and left me with a broken Ulna & Radius in my left wrist about 15 years ago. (along with several other injuries).
I had to "set it" myself in the doctor's office by making a tight fist (he couldn't do it )
Luckily my wrist was strong from playing the bass...
It left me with a chip of bone from the fracture right in the corner of my wrist that gives me a jolt now & then.
Used the time off to learn "Teen-Town" and cut off the cast after 3 weeks(because I couldn't stand it any more)...
