I've been playing guitar for years, acoustic then electric, and I'm just about good enough to get by. Playing bass has made me a better guitarist, or at least got me thinking more in terms of proper lead playing rather than just bashing out chords. And, as has already been stated, it forces you into a greater understandingof and appreciation for theory, which spills over to any other instrument you might pick up.
