I've not used it, but I have heard good things about fruity loops. It's basically a sequencer program. The demo version is fully functional except for saving your project files. Though, you can export to mp3 or somesuch.

I still use my Roland PMA-5 as my drum machine and metronome.

Alternative

An alternative is to develop your own internal clock, timing, and rhythm. Sort of like building your own internal rhythm machine.

First off is learn temo speeds. You will need a metronome.

Fast (allergo)              120-168
Moderately Fast (moderato)  108-120
Moderate Walk (andante)     76-108
Slow (adagio)               66-76
Very Slow (largo)           40-66
learn time signatures

Add accents on certain beats, were you count the number of beats per bar, and "hit' or play on the accent.

* = accent or note played

Then add more accents were notes are played, and add different types of note values. Also keep counting.

+1 on fruity loops. Easy to use, just basically little tabs you click on and off. Can change kits etc.

And if you ever feel like making some hard trance tracks, your already set!!
