Question CGDG Tuning

Sign in to disble this ad
My band is in the process of writing new songs for our debut album. I made a suggestion of using a different tuning for one song. For the song, I tune my bass down to CGDG. One song by Soundgarden, Mailman, used the same tuning for bass.

The reason why I posted this thread about this tuning is, how can I play scales, chords, arpeggios, and any other important things in this tuning? Also, I am going to add a bass solo into the song that is using this tuning in my bands debut album.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Come up to D std or go all the way down to C std. Any type of dropped/alternate tuning makes it a little more difficult.
I'm not sure what you're looking for us to tell you, though. I play in drop C (ACGCF) and don't have a problem with any of your aforementioned concerns?

CGCD or Drop C puts the 5th right below the root. It is done like this so it makes it easier for Guitarists to do Root 5 Chords but what this means for u is that your Root is Moved up to the 2nd Position. Im new to this Forum so I don't really know of all the tools available here, But I'll try my best to Diagram this out.
{-9-(10)(11)}G
{-6-78}D
{-34-5}A
{--1-2}E
This is in Normal Tuning Drop C is only one Step Down from Drop D In which U chance the Top E string Down to D So its DADG

Drop C is as you alrdy know CGCF

Which takes this Pattern here
{-9-(10)(11)}G
{-6-78}D
{-34-5}A
{--1-2}E
and Changes it to
{-9-(10)(11)}F
{-6-78}C
{-34-5}G
{----1-2}C
When you play in CGDG
Ure moving your 3rd and 4th String Down a Hole step so it would look like this
{---9-(10)(11)}G
{---6-78}D
{-34-5}G
{----1-2}C
I know the Diagram is a little hard to Follow but it's almost the same as Tuningto CFGD with F up a Step to keep the Root for Easier Chords OF course my intervals may be wrong here But I dont think they are

Once you change the tuning, your scale degrees, etc. are not the same. That is why I do not bother retuning. Course we play dirt simple Country and retuning is not necessary.
