I've been given a few contemporary gospel songs to learn and they supplied the cord changes, How ever when I play the roots they donot sound right, they do have slash cords but the non inverted cords donot sound right, could someone help a newbie!

Well the charts may be in a different key than the recording you're listening. Or they may just be the wrong chords.

That looks like a good progression to me. On the slash chords you play the slash. Now D - Bm - A or I - vi - v seems to be the primary chords. Leave out the others and then insert them one at a time see if that helps.

If they gave you the songs with chords, I'm sure that is how they want you to play them. Might help to have the rhythm guitar strum the progression for you. Sometime praise bands will use capo's quite a lot, especially the cut capo, this does change the "sound" (key). But, I think what they gave you is what they want you to play

Well, I just went on youtube and listened to the first one. It's 1, 6, 4 and then 1, 6, 4, 3. You should at least train your ear to hear basic changes.

Thanks guys, I think they're playing in a diffrent key in at least one and I think the cut capo is whats really throwing me off a little!
