Hey all, new member greeting from the UK.

I’m a fairly recent convert from the six string company of guitars for over ten years to the deep satisfaction of my new four string friend. Loving it, and has certainly opened my ears to listening to music with an awareness of what's going on 'down there'.

So I've recently become aware of the tutorial work of Michael Dimin, referenced through another resource I'm working through at the moment. I have a question though concerning the Melbay release of The Chordal Approach which seems to be a double title – ‘The Art of Solo Bass, The Chordal Approach Book/CD Set’. The write up states that it has been re-written by Mel Bay, so is this significantly different to the original release by Michael Dimin?

Any thoughts or experience welcomed folks.

edit: Could anyone tell me the actual ISBN for the original Michael Dimin release of the Chordal Approach? That would be great.

The original was self published, there was no ISBN. The publisher corrupted the files and it is no longer available.

Actually I just answered this question in an email (perhaps you are one and the same). nut here it goes:

The Art of Solo Bass (TAoSB) reviews some of the material in The Chordal Approach (TCA). The main difference is that
The Chordal Approach is more theoretical while The Art of Solo Bass is more practical. Mel Bay wanted more music that the player could play. TCA had a great deal of theoretical knowledge but only 2 real examples (Blues and Rhythm Changes). TAoSB has many more examples including, using chords to embellish single note lines and a number of chord melody arrangements that I could not license for TCA. Where TCA was broken up into those 2 songs, TAoSB has 2 main sections, "comping" and "chord melody arrangements". Both the blues and rhythm changes are in TAoSB but w/o the same theoretical depth that TCA has. Instead, TAoSB does take the concept further with the development of playing in a chord melody style.

I hope this helps
Thanks

Mike, thank you - and yes, one and the same! It occured to me that I could actually pose the question direct hence my e-mail to you but not until after I had already firstly posted here.

Still, the information I imagine will also be useful to others like myself who have not long been aware of your material and still feeling their way need high quality resources to assist them.

Cheers.
