Thanks guys for helping me understand chord substitutions and options. The last thing I can think of I've been wondering about are Coltrane changes. What are they?

The Coltrane Matrix, as it's sometimes called, is a chord cycle invented by Trane and used in a lot of his compositions -Giant Steps and 26 to 2 are two of them. In C they look like this:

C / Eb7 / | Ab / B7 / | E / G7 |C / / / |

it could also start on a ii:

Dm7 / Eb7 / | Ab / B7 / | E / G7 |C / / / |

The one that starts on the tonic is a great set of substitute changes any time a chord lasts 4 bars. It also works nicely on the A sections of Rhythm Changes. It's a really great way to add interest to a solo...
