i've never learned this tune although i should ...very hip ...what do you mean by 'muting" ....i don't hear anything like palm muting....it's just some fleet fingered Jaco staccato like lines in the chorus ...he's plucking near the bridge Pickup so it sounds tight like muting but it's not!

Right. Not muted. Just normal fingerstyle.

Can you call anything Jaco did "normal"?
I'm hearing those notes being played short with the left hand as opposed to muted with the right.

Been working on this one too..... And the chorus has been tricky. Gotta love "vintage" recordings. So hard to hear what the heck is going on! Sounds like there's at least some "ghost notes" in there? To me anyway....

Jaco sometimes used to use the pinky on his right hand to mute, too. (He'd lie it against the strings.)
And, yes to both the ghost notes and his left hand affecting the note lengths here.

I would say that there are ghost notes in the chorus which Jaco achieved by releasing pressure with his fretting fingers so the string isn't completely stopped against the fingerboard...ergo, in a sense they are "muted", albeit via the left hand.

+1.

Quick fret release but leaving the fingers in contact with the string/s for the staccato muting. A flatter left hand approach helps with that, and a little more attack in the right hand to 'bounce' the staccato feel off the muting going on with the left.

Appreciate the responses guys. I just saw muting in the tabs for the song and wasn't sure how he achieved the sound. Tricky stuff...

I believe Marlow DK did a video lesson on Ghost Notes? Search for it on Youtube. Well worth watching if you don't understand the technique....

How about the time he ran through a pickup basketball game, stole the ball, disappeared for 5 minutes, then came hard charging back to the court and did a layup?

No?

I guess you're right

There is 2 ways to play the chorus from my experience. You can play the A as an open string and alternate your fingers when playing the line down as muted or do a rake down to the A on the E string while muting. Both ways are working fine.
