"Use the search function."

If no one ever brought up an old topic, there would be few if any new threads to keep us all busy!

Yes! Someone would rather create a Powerpoint presentation on "DO A SEARCH!" than offer an opinion (or refrain from giving it.)

Well, the fact is, a person is going to sound pretty much the same on the Squier as on the Stingray...

Inquiring minds are dead minds

There's a million of them, all unthinking and unimaginative. Like:

"Inquiring minds want to know"

alt: "Enquiring minds want to know"

Well. I've only heard that one about 897 fumtyzillion times since I came online back in the dark ages! And it's hardly ever the product of an actual mind, if what's filling the rest of the posts it's clipped from indicates anything. Usually the perpetrator puts some smilies next to it as if they have just come up with something starkly individual and witty. Wooh, boy.

If they were really Inquring Minds I would have expected to see some progress over their posting careers on the forums, some sense that some effort had been put in to learning and research and critical thinking, and not just the same supended state of Duhness.

"Common quotes on talkbass that irks you?"

None. I like to read (and post) the same things over...and over...and over ad nauseum. Same reason I listen to FM radio.

FWIW / IMO

That's the one that irks me the most. Like I have time to sort through 997 posts about "capacitors" or whatever just to get a simple answer to a simple question.

Yeah that's my *favorite* as well. I mean give me a break man. You can use a "search function" for any new thread. Why don't we have the moderators shut down all new postings and simply limit everyone to search function of what's already been posted. It would save everyone a lot of trouble.

BTW - you should use a search function for this, seriously dude

Telling someone "Do a search, n00b" only makes you look like an ass

"^^ this" irks me for some reason.

just sayin and meh.

lots more but I can't think of em right now. I get irked when people post, "what's the weight on that?" in the classifieds also.

Let's also remember that since the original question was asked, technological advances have occurred, new gear has come out and opinions may have changed since then.

So really in some cases, using the search function will result in old answers that may or may not be applicable anymore.

Since you ask... not a quote so much, as a style of post that is of the "coffee klatch" variety. "Basses that are red with black pickguards... DISCUSS". I understand that some people find the primary value in a site to be community and a constant buzz of noise... but to me that generates a signal to noise ratio that makes it harder to find the substantive posts on the board.

To ME this board represents an opportunity to learn from people that know more about a subject than I do. These sort of "I'm lonely, please talk to me" posts just add to the noise.

I agree on the "weight" question...

The last bass I put in the classifieds, the first two PMs I got were one word: "weight?" Come to think of it, only one of them actually included a question mark. And it was a Peavey T-40 for cryin' out loud. Those things were made on a computer controlled machine and I'm guessing the weight varied maybe 10% (if that) between runs... And after 11 pounds, it's just heavy. Get a bottle of Motrin and a bigass strap and deal with it...

It really grinds my gears when I can't find the droids I'm looking for.

Seriously, I'm also not a fan of posts that just say "^^ this".
"+1" is a tad less irking, but is still a waste of space.

This X 100!

The Combustion is great; I'm even looking for a second DW to round out the fleet. I was gonna start a domestic vs. import Dingwall thread until I realized that, technically, both are imports. For that fact, I understand that there are enough Chinese-Canadian citizens to make it a fair fight.

Maybe I should do a search first.

The only posts that irk me on Talkbass are those that are mean-spirited or condescending. I like the metaphor of online forum as cocktail party. We are all free to ignore what doesn't interest us. If you see a thread title that has been beaten to death elsewhere, why not ignore it? If you pass by a group of people discussing yesterday's news, do you interject that you find them moronic, or simply walk by? Many are quick to berate in print someone who has innocently posted a mistaken impression or misinformation, or simply a contrary opinion. If the dialogue transpired in person, cooler heads would hopefully prevail. Disagreement is healthy, but adding anger to it sucks all the utility out of it.

I hate opening up a thread because it has a lot of post, then I open it up and there are 248905 bumps... some people need to realize at some point, no one cares what pickups you should put in your squire...

When I was at the Fur Peace Ranch, GE Smith was also teaching guitar that weekend. He told a story about meeting Jeff Beck and he asked Beck to show him a technique on GE's Telecaster. Beck (a Les Paul player at the time), picked up GE's Tele and it sounded like Beck playing the Les Paul. GE said it gave him a lot to think about.

I'm doing a SEARCH right now, of my brain pan. And it says DO A SEARCH is a valid reply if some of the following conditions are met

1) the same freeking topic - often with the same wording - is to be seen clearly on the front topics page

2) it's a bi-weekly topic that always ends the same way anyway

3) it's technical and physics/acoustics/electronics based and God has not decreed any recent revisions for the Laws Of The Universe since v1.0000001 way back when

4) the same three or four people are the only ones capable of giving good and true answers and are sick of this dumbazz ****. Send them some babes/cash/chocoloates and maybe this will change

5) some poor phool spent months writing or compliling a very good FAQ and you are too frickin' lazy to check things out

That said, I don't blame newbies so much. It's confusing at first, so much to take in, so much bewildering and contradictory blab too. It's the guys who have been around enough to know better that are real pains in the keister. And the know it alls who perpetuate bad myths because they want to look like bigshots to someone.

Man am I an irksome bastid. I am.
