I have both, and IMO they are both good. For a complete beginner, I'd probably opt for the "Dummies" book first, as it explains everything in a very easy to understand way. I'd then follow that up with the "Bass Method" book.

I have Ed's Building Walking Bass Lines - not the combined 3 volume edition. So..... yes to Dummies I was impressed with the graphs and patterns shown. Walking Bass Lines dealt with just building bass lines. IMO that book is one of the best on that subject. I do not have any experience with the extended version, i.e. volume 3

Dummies is a good starting point and anything Ed writes is worth your time. A big yes to both IMO.
