Two suggestions.

The Music Dojo has good bass classes on line. Adam Nitti's classes have a lot of info and he's great answering questions.

If you would like private instruction via the web I highly recommend Cliff Engel of IIB.

He checks his email a couple times a week. He does do a clinic now and then and email will go unansewed. As a student he gives you a warning. The address I always used was instituteofbass@yahoo.com

In fact one of the things I liked about his lessons I had more contact with him than I would a teacher I saw once a week. He typically does a lesson every other week, he'll do weekly if you want. In between I could email questions as much as I needed. Also if you want you can setup a chat session with him.

I would say give him another try before giving up, his lessons were good.

I'm thinking seriously about workshoplive.com but just started looking at the options...and a little confused about it for now. Keeping an eye on this thread for experiences and recommendations though.

All his lesson are a combination of what you are interested in and what he thinks will get you there. Being correspondence he relies on you feedback before preparing the next lesson. Like any teacher who been teaching awhile he has a lot of materials prepared, PDF, audio play along, and he makes a audio file for each lesson reviewing previous lesson and explaining the new lesson.

I studied improv with Cliff that was real good, but I didn't study slap. For slap I took Ant Wellingtons class at Music Dojo. It was a good class.

Music Dojo are classes, not personal lessons.

They have text curriculum you read/print out. Depending on the lesson there are example and play along audio files. Also depending on lesson some have video files to demo technique. Then each course has an area to post questions. I had answers from Adam Nitti to questions that were as long as the lesson. The classes move fast because there is a new lesson every day (except weekends) over the length of the course. They have an short sample class you can sign up and take for free.

I studied with Cliff Engel for about a year. I highly recommend Cliff. He is a very good teacher with a ton of lesson material. There was a time during my studies where Cliff's e-mail was getting spammed real heavy so he wasn't getting many of the legit e-mails. That is why he switched to the "Institute of Bass" address - it was supposed to take care of that. I found Cliff to be VERY responsive and helpful. Everything about his approach is top notch.

I currently study with George Urbaszek at http://www.creativebass.com/ Like Cliff, he is another real deal. His format is different, but equally as top notch. George has a great ear and really provides excellent feedback on the submitted lesson material. The major difference is Cliff assigns the lesson to work through, where as George gives you the lesson material and a number of assignments to submit. He then provides feedback on your previous submission with the next lesson. Cliff will critique any material you send to him, but it is optional.

I can't say enough good about both Cliff & George. I would encourage you to check them both out and give one a try.

Hope this helps. Reply if you would like any more specific information.

All the best,
Tim

These tips have been really helpful. I am giving Cliff Engel a shot. Also trying the free musicdojo to check them out. The Berklee class for bass starts at the end of September.

Here is another option.

I have heard that Paul Pouska does a good job.

Todd Johnson and Janek both offer lessons online. You'd have to contact them regarding pricing etc. but it's another option.
