Counterpoint on bass?

I've wondered what would happen if rather than doubling my guitarists riffs I could play counterpoint to them bach style?
Do any other bassists use this style does it sound good in a rock context?

In my personal experience of doing counterpoint with my guitarist is that aside from having to do it right, you have to be mixed right with your band, otherwise no one can tell. But it does make songs much more interesting and adds some chordal harmony that makes it sound thicker and cooler.

I don't know about "Bach style" but counterpoint is used all the time.

Listen to the great Walking bass player they are creating counter melodies all the time. Rock players have been playing counter melodies on bass for ages.

Most modern music does contain "counterpoint" just not in the traditional sense. "Bach" style would be mostly voice leading (which may sound cool for an intro) with a Bass,Tenor,Alto, and Soprano voic. The counterpoint is usually created between the Bass and Soprano voices while the Tenor and Alto just provide as "inner voices" which make the harmony sound more full and outline the chord.

Check out some Haydn and Bach for string arrangements.
