I'm trying to learn funk bass.
I started playing bass about a year and a half ago (after playing guitar, mostly classical, for about 12 years) and I have found this site full of insight. On this forum I have found very good recomendations for latin and slap bass instruction using the search function (I hadn't even signed up at the time) but I can't quite locate something for funk.
What I'm really after is something that has the same format as "The Latin Bass Book" from Sher but on funk, i.e. book with accurate transcriptions of whole songs and a cd that has the bass panned to one side so it can be isolated in case of need.
Has anybody seen anything similar?

You could check out Fingerstyle Funk by Rocco Prestia. It's not as in depth as the Latin Book but it is very very informative and has enough songs and accompaning charts to give you a good solid foundation. It's a video instructional. Rocco's also got a book out called Sittin In With Rocco Prestia. All of this stuff is availbale on his website:

"Funk Fussion Bass" by Jon Liebman. Actually I´m studying with it and it´s a great method to develope technique and funk vocabulary.

I just picked up Hal Leonard's "Funk Bass" and it is an awesome book, but it's pretty advanced. There's lots of transcriptions of classic funk songs and lots of different technique sections from basic slap and fingerstyle to Wooten's double thumb technique and double pop etc.

I also love "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" - play those tunes well and you will have a great sense of syncopation that will easily carry you into all funk styles.

If you should happen to pick up my Funk Bass book (or any of my other Hal Leonard books), fee free to contact me and let me know if you have any questions. I'm happy to help at any time. Thanks!
