Im playing a local battle of the bands, and we only get to play one cover and one original. I found out or cover is tuned down a whole step, while our original is in drop D. I've never had to tune down a whole step before and i just want to make sure my bass will be playable.

What happened when you tried it?

Are you tuning to a drop-C, or just the whole thing to what would be a D-standard?

If it's tuning to d-standard...just adjust where you're playing. A 'G' is still a 'G' no matter what fret it happens to fall on.

It will be playable...the strings will be much looser, the tuning will be far from perfect but it will sure be playable. The only person that you notice these things, if anybody does, is you.

yeah i know, but i guess i should be saying that im going to be tuning back up imidiately for our original song, so technically i'll leave the E string D and tune the rest, this much of a tuning difference isn't going to effect the neck right?

i don't think the tension in the neck will be a problem, but the tension in the strings might be... i personally dont like sloppy strings.

other than that, i would be more concerned with the practicality and hassle of tuning rather than anything gear-related

IF... you're planning to tune down physically during the set - I don't think that will look good. picture this - you play one song - then stop to tune down/up to play the other song. Not a good idea. (if that's what you mean)

However, if you are doing both songs with your bass tuned to C (and you'd want to have it set up for that in advance) - then just shift up in position to play in D.

I would think that in a battle of the bands, you'd want to look as professional as possible.

it shouldnt be a problem at all but if u have another bass u should put that bass in a whole step down and just switch it out

i do that and i dont have to worry about tuning down and back up again

I think you want to:

- Bring two basses, or

- Learn how to play the tune in standard tuning.

What are your bandmates doing? Nothing says bush league louder than making spectators watch a band tune up.

Get a 5 string bass and tune it BEADG ... you will be able to play all of your music with that one bass and one tuning.

We play one song in open C, I insisted everyone have a second guitar for it which fortunately was possible.

And you needed to detune because of what? The guitar is tuned that way? What does that have to do with you?

Pretty much a golden rule to never tune between songs in a band comp unless you absolutely must. People are far more forgiving for a guitar change than watching someone muck around with a tuner on stage, or even worse hearing you tune through the PA.

Nothing is more professional than going from one song straight into the next in these kinds of gigs.
