A simple drum machine goes a lot further than what is crammed inside of a multi efx pedal. With practice comes new riffs and song ideas, and they may not fit with the standard 4/4 vanilla beat that is in an efx pedal.
Having some beats in an efx pedal is better than nothing though.

I picked up a Zoom B3 as a birthday present to myself and have been VERY impressed with it so far. It has a "rhythm trainer" built in... There's a handful of 4/4 beats and a couple 3/4 & 5/4 selections. The rhythm trainer section is fairly limited, but it's there. Overall, the B3 is pretty impressive for only $199 new. I'm fortunate to have a couple "real" pedalboards with some very nice single effects, and while the Zoom isn't quite on their level, it's an incredible value and sounds impressive.

If you have an iPhone/iPad, check out the DM1 drum machine. Fairly robust for not a lot of bucks, decent sound and good features without being overly complicated.

For sure.

Most actual drum machines come with preprogrammed beats, as far as I know. I have a Boss DR-880 that has a lot of stuff in it... You can get really in depth and program you own beats and complete songs, or you can just turn the wheel and press play to use the drum loops programmed from the factory.

DM1 would be a great place to start if you're thinking of the drum machine route, kinda like a gateway drug. Lol It's pretty easy to program and doesn't sound too bad. I have the iPad version, which I *think* has a more features than the iPhone version...?

There are a handful of beats preprogrammed in DM1 spanning a couple different styles, but probably not enough to make it something you'd use if you don't want to program at all. However, it's pretty easy to program beats in DM1, it's set up on a grid and you just light up the squares. (Pic below) You can save your beats too. If you feel like digging in further, you can program different patterns within each beat, and there's a sequencer where you can program the different patterns into a song. There are also import/export options if you feel like sharing or backing up to Dropbox. The secret sauce with DM1 is the Swing slider... It took me a minute to figure it out, I wanted to do a shuffle beat and didn't think it could do it until I found that slider, which isn't on the beat programming page for some reason.

I've never heard of that Beat Buddy thing before today, but it seems like it might be something pretty close to what you're looking for. I could definitely see the benefit to having something like that in a pedal form as well. It's cool that they're doing a Kickstarter campaign for it, but it looks like the Beat Buddy is at least 7-8 months out, if it even happens. (delta's vaporware reference)

I just thought of another option that might be worth checking out... EZDrummer from Toontrack. It's a loop based PC program, so you wouldn't be able to take it with you, but for just practicing at home, it might be the ticket. I used it a while back for some scratch idea track stuff, sounds pretty good.

Oooo, there's also the Boss RC2 that might be something you'd dig... Boss's smallest phrase sampler, and it has some beats programmed in as well. Phrase samplers are cool because they'll improve both your time AND creativity/improvisation.

NOTHING beats jamming with live musicians though... Just sayin'.

Cheap and Simple?
buy this:

Nothing fancy but for just playing in the bedroom, it does the job.
. Plenty of different effects
. 30 pre-programmed drum beats (kinda generic but you can change to tempo to mix it up)
. Tuner
. You can plug your headphones into it.

I've got one and keep it plugged in all of the time.
It is one of the more "entry level" modeling processors, but it works just fine for me and what I do.
Cheap and Simple = Good in my book.

The BeatBuddy is now in development - they are getting some final feedback from potential users to determine the features. It seems that there will be 2 versions - a sinmple one with pre-programmed beats, drum sets and storage, and a high-end version where the user can create his own rhythm tracks on a computer and download to the pedal. Sounds Awesome!! Can't wait to get one.
