Amen to that I've had GREAT SUCCESS programming with Hydrogen hell I've started to do songs not just practice beats with it and I'm starting to get decent with it.

Nothing beats the price of free either

Picked up one of these off eBay for $70 last week. A basic machine that has stood the test of time.

I have messed around with various (free) drum software programs, but did not want to spend too much time learning each one or customizing. All I wanted was some decent backing to jam over.

The SR16 has 50 preset patterns, each pattern has a "verse" and a "chorus" sub-pattern and 2 fills for transitions. Using a foot pedal you can control when the switch from one sub-pattern to the next occurs, which invokes the fill.
So far it is lots of fun for just making up stuff and working on timing.
