Their are lots of scale, but most aren't typically used. You don't need to learn all the scales at once, IMO it is best to learn a Major and Natural Mino, then Major and Minor Pentatonic and learn them inside out. Learn how to make music with them, develop your ear, and technique with them. After that modes and other scales will come easy, you will have a point of reference to build on.

Sliding scales are useful too... Those are scales that you can move up and down the fretboard and play in almost any key. Learn a minor and major one of these for your aresenal when playing with other people.

There are 12 major, 12 of 3 types of minor making 36 minor, and a lot of others (pentatonic, blues, diminished, etc.).

The major scales are the main ones to learn, and each major has 6 relative scales (called modes).

Modes are very valuable and used all the time, but take things one step at a time. Best to start with basic like this thread talks about learn them inside out. Not only to play them but get the sound in your ear, learn the sound of different scale degrees against chords. You do that then you will be able to breeze through modes and other scales.
