Edly's Music Theory for Practical People: Any Good?

Sign in to disble this ad
First of all, sorry if this is the wrong forum.

Does anybody have this book? Is it any good?

I have a very rough, vague and limited knowledge of music theory and am looking to learn. This seems like a good place to start.

If this book is no good, are there any that are better?

I think it's excellent. I wish I'd had it for my students when I was teaching a lot. Some of the diagrams look just like legible versions of the things I used to draw by hand. I like it because:

A. He doesn't assume you play piano.
B. He uses examples from lots of music besides western classical music
C. He doesn't assume you read music (although it's hard to discuss music without using the language of music!)
D. He explains things in a logical progression
E. It's easy to read and he doesn't get hung up much on the arcane details (like I'm prone to do).

Highly recommended!!

I have that book and I think it's excellent. I took music theory (correction TRIED to) in college and I didn't do so well (got a 'C'). Later, a guitar teacher recommended this book to me. This book really makes theory pretty straight forward. The book is easy to read. I think it's probably even easy to read for someone at the Jr. Highschool level. I highly recommend it!

Yeah, I totally agree. It's an amazing book that manages to explain things very clearly without ever sacrificing depth or detail. It's the best general theory book I've ever found.

I haven't seen that book. I use this one and find it very good; concise and to the point. It is supposedly for highschool/1st year university level.
