I just say I play bass, if someone want more of a definition they will ask.

Well it was meant to be a hybrid between a Electric Guitar and a Cello (double bass) i'd say Electric Bass Guitar

But if they ask me i say i play the fish guitar or the octopus (just to mess around)

I voted "bass guitar" because I appreciate and often emphasize the guitaristic aspect, but I would probably rather say "electric bass guitar" because I definitely appreciate the electric aspect too.

I thought I saw another thread like this somewhere...

both words really mean just about the exact same thing to me.

either way i play notes in the bass clef weather its an upright, bass guitar, electric bass, or a synthesizer, hence i am a "bass player"

When I was playing double bass & electric, I'd say "electric bass" or "electric bass guitar". Now I just play the electric, and I'll either say "bass", "electric bass", "bass guitar" or a combination of these last two phrases.

Stand-up bass

A music director, who knew I played bass guitar, asked me if I played "stand-up bass." I said, "You bet, I stand up when I play my bass!"
