Elizabethan Bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
So, we had to pick a topic to do a semester project on in my Shakespeare class about the Elizabethan Era, so I naturally chose music...

Thing is, I have no idea about any Elizabethan Music and bass.

Basically what I'm asking is, do any of you know of songs / composers I should look up to play on bass for my class? I can easily get recordings, but finding the music has been difficult, and my ear is terrible.

I can read music, and I don't think difficulty will be a large factor, I've been playing for 5 years and have a fair amount of time to learn it.

Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Edit: Should have specified, the era is roughly 1558-1603.

u can find some english folk songs by guys like William Byrd. not really Elizabethan, but unmistakebly olde-tyme anyways. hey, if u dont have any luck, u can always play scarborough fair

Stop by your school's library and get a book on History of Music they are actually cool. They cover the people, politics, and history of the time and how it influenced the music and art. Lots of musicial references and photos of art of the time.

Those years are the end of the Renaissance and very beginning of the Baroque period.

Oh yeah, there's nothing like a good sackbut solo.

Wikipedia is your friend:

I don't think there was much written for electric bass guitar in that era...

Henry Purcell. He had a real thing for the Queen. You might broaden the score of your paper to include music in Europe from that time. Check out what was going on in Italy at the time. Giovanni Gabreli was working at St. Mark's cathedral at the time and doing some amazing things.
