Energy Crisis - electric or acoustic?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey friends,

For a few years I've weighed the pros and cons of playing electric or acoustic bass, the differences in sound and feel; the old, majestic upright or the fretted, solid body of a bass guitar? If forced to choose between the two, which would it be?

Personally, the bass guitar was the more economical/practical choice considering musical background (instrumental rock bands) and portability (don't own a car)

Recent political trends have led me to consider the benefits of acoustic instruments from a new angle; I call upon the politically savy bassists to settle my nerves on this matter. Is Peak Oil a serious concern or a "corrupt globalist scam"? What will the world be like 20 years down the road and should musicians be opting for acoustic instruments over electric ones?

You're kidding, right?

I would give up cell phones, microwave ovens, computers, even my wristwatch before I would give up electric bass entirely.

Acoustic bass has its place, but this is just silly.

yer getting worried over nothing... sure the oil is running low, but electricity doesn't come from oil...

howabout, if your so worried, putting a solar panel on your roof for running your Bass off then...

You can get solar chargers for charging up rechargeable batteries as well... so you can easily run a practice amp off solar power...

I have a small sailboat, I use solar panels to keep my batteries topped off. Most stuff on the boat is 12 volt, any mains things I want to power can be done with an inverter.

I've been giving this some thought myself, but for different reasons. I'm interested in building a cabin in the woods and living in seclusion for the most part, so an acoustic or upright would make sense for me in that scenario. On the other hand, if I go all out I'd like to install solar power or something at the cabin so I can take nature photos and upload them to the internet for peoples viewing pleasure and maybe keep an online journal of what life in the woods is like.

Considering how much of the world's food production relies on oil, I think the electric bass will be the least of your worries...

Absolutely. They're much louder than ABGs.

are you kidding me?!?! most of the world's electricity comes from oil one way or another- mostly coal burning power plants. that's why even using a lot of electricity is a huge contribution to global warming and our earth's polution!

I use a 15W practice amp. I don't think I'm doing much harm compared to using my computer and other stuff like Dave said.

Now that is someone who's never better to hear a orchestra. I hear guys talk about Metal and amp stacks. I laugh and tell them to go hear a good orchestra perform The Planets by Holst. Hold on to your seat when they play Mars.

I don't think I've heard a metal song yet that has come remotely close to how "heavy" Mars is. It's quite the intense experience live.
