I live near the bay area (Petaluma right next to marin) and I've taken lessons from Geo from the Bay Area darlings Toast Machine. IF that helps.

Depends on what you want to study:
Funk, Latin, Jazz, R&B, Classical ?
Upright or Electric, or both.

All of these guys have great credits:

For upright:
John Wiitala
Glen Richmond- Jazz School in Berkeley
Steward McCain " "
Christian McBride- somewhere in Stockton??
Barry Green- Classical- Northern Cal Bass club.

For electric:

Mike Wilcox- R&B ,funk & jazz - Jazz School
Kai Eckhardht - jazz & funk
Dave Belove- Jazz & Latin - Jazz School
John Costalupas (excuse my spelling) funk, R&B - various styles - at Gelb Music
Bobby Vega- ' 70s thumb funk -maybe at Guitar Showcase, San Jose??

I have studied with:
Glen Richmond for upright,
Kai Eckhardht for jazz & funk.
David Belove for latin.

and they all are great instuctors !!

As in Jazzschool Institute in Berkeley? Kai teaches there too. Growing up, I took lessons from Tim Allen at Guitar Showcase. I got in touch with Kai and am really considering it at this point.

Yes- Jazz School on Addison st. Berkeley.
I attended classes there for 4 semesters for piano trios
on upright bass. taught by Peter Horvath. I was working on my upright playing.
Peter gave me some great pointers when working with Piano players for voicings & notes.

Recommend it!!
How advanced are you as player?
It s like taking master classes.

Used to study with Kai. He caters lessons to your experience as bassist. He moved to Bay Area about 10 years ago with help of Alphonso Johnson. We met at Alphonso work shop at Gelb and I did not know who he was at that time.

When I first studied with him 10 years ago- I could barely keep the funk grooves going & my solos were not happin either with him. So we worked on that for long time.

Then about 2 years ago?? I started up with him and now I can almost keep up with him - as we sometimes warm up on funk grooves & trading 4 & 8's. (He 's playing 5 string piccolo bass too.)

He also got me interested in playing 6 's instead of 5 's which I normally play.
So I play F bass 6 now - off & on.

FYI, Michael Wilcox is not at JazzSchool now, but he has a private studio in Emeryville, near Berkely and Oakland, and he is currently looking for new students. Contact him at wilcotime@aol.com.
