So I'm finishing up my freshman year at college. I took this semester off from music only to conclude that I have to go back... I was mad because my bass teacher gave me a B- first semester and it really screwed up my GPA, but I've swallowed my pride and I'm ready to go back and try 10 times as hard. This semester I've just been listening to a lot more music. I haven't been playing too much besides playing at church every other week. I've definitely expanded my tastes though, and I can't wait to put that into practice.
This summer I'm going to be interning at a local studio to start learning the in's and out's of recording and production. I'll also be working a lot to start getting some production gear of my own. I'll also be practicing A LOT to get my technical chops and reading up to a higher level. Lots of chordal harmony stuff... playing charts. All the good stuff I've taken a break from this semester.
When I come back to school in the fall, I'm taking almost all music classes (besides my philosophy and psychology elective). One music history, music theory (probably 200 or 300 level, haven't taken a placement test yet), intro to sound recording (should be easy after internship), and music and technology (same...). I'm also adding a secondary education minor so I get the teaching certificates necessary to teach in my state.
My dream is to start producing my own stuff (hip hop and/or electronica) and break through. I know the likelihood of that is slim to none, but I always have enjoyed setting and trying to reach high goals. I'm hoping to go to NYU's music business program for my masters... mostly in hopes of making connections that there are to be made in NYC, but also to learn the business side of our art so that I can manage and protect myself as much as I can.
If all else fails, I'll have my teaching degree to fall back on. I'll probably get a MMe so I can teach at college if need be, but probably just high school. I wouldn't be disappointed if my life turned into this at all. It's not necessarily what I've been dreaming of, but it would allow me to do what I love every day and share my passion with others. Not to mention reasonable hours, decent pay (it's not impossible to make some cash as a teacher.. you just have to know the ways you can increase your salary), and a guaranteed summer and Christmas vacation every year.
Am I being realistic or am I just totally off base? Any advice? I'm open ears. Share what you have, tear me apart, anything. I'm open!

Edit: I forgot to say that I'm taking keyboard lessons this summer and will be focusing on that A LOT. I will still be doing a lot of bass... but probably even more keyboard. I've been messing around a lot with synths and I believe some keyboard skills would take my production skills to a different level. Is this a good idea?
