I'm approaching the second verse of Hot Stuff with the idea of halving the beat value on "the last part" to make a very sparse root/octave root/octave on the second vocal line (...another night
on my own - doomp-daaahmp, doomp- daaahmp) to make the space needed so the part played feels "lonely". Thats fine, works a treat.
But on the last line of that verse the line sung is "bring a
wild man back home", then it goes into the chorus. Well, I want to play a "wild" fill over that vocal part, resolving to home, which I presume is the chorus chord (D). Now, I can fill that progression with notes all day, double or triple the notes played, play in triplets, play hammer ons and pulloffs, staccatto etc and call that mess all "a fill". But it sounds like a blistering mess when I get something wrong, or a straight run when I get it right.
There's nothing really wild about the fills I'm playing, except my scant regard for proper rythm, technique and note choice I suppose.
While I keep experimenting with different approaches I wouldn't mind picking all your brains on some theory advice on note and fill selection in the context of the song "Hot Stuff" by Donna Summer.
So. Gimme some hot stuff people
