Finally had a chance to play with some real people, and it was a riot. I've known the guitar player for about 10 years, and the drummer is a guy who played in bands with him back in the late 80's and early 90s, so they have a lot of experience and I was pretty nervous. I told them up front that I am pretty much an utter noob and they were cool with it, they were desperate to play with a bass player of even the lowest caliber I guess, as we are in short supply here in the middle of nowhere.
I have to say, that it was a great learning experience. I didnt know *any* of the songs, and a lot of them I wouldn't have bothered messing with on my own. But one of them would come up with a song, the guitar player would tell me the chords and I would just hang on for dear life. I basically just rooted through the whole evening, trying to lock in with the drummer and play something that if not good, at least didn't draw out any winces from either of them.
If you are like me, and have just been hiding in your basement, definitely, find some people to play with, I got really lucky, these guys are super cool, and very good players. And it was a great learning experience as well as being a crapload of fun.
Also, I'd have to say that playing with a live drummer for the first time, is sort of like your first time having sex, in that you *think* you know what it's gonna be like because of your many trysts with Rosie, but in reality it's way more intense, and you are not nearly as cool as you thought you were.
