Find it hard to pop the D string

I dont know what it is my slaps okay when using the G string to pop notes but when moving down to the D string its very slow because I cant seem to get my finger under the string very quickly/easily. Would you put it down to technique needing practise or that the bass which does seem smaller necked (width not length) than some models is just got its strings positioned too close?

Bass is a Spector Pro 4

It's possible that it could *partially* be because of the string spacing, but it's mostly just practice IMO/IME. I had the same issue when learning to slap and ended up ripping my cuticle away from the nail quite a few times.... ouch.

One thing that helps is limiting motion. You don't need to get your finger right underneath the string to pop. It's tricky enough to get your finger between the D and G strings as it is, so developing a technique where you're not moving too much when using your thumb makes it easier because your popping finger is in close proximity to where it needs to be.

I don't have any links(I'm posting from my phone) but there might be some clips on youtube from Alexis Sklarevski's(not sure about the spelling) slap instructional video. He had a pretty economical technique if i remember correctly.

What works for me is rotating my wrist as little as possible but still managing to get a solid slap. It's hard to explain in text but I also pop as part of my action when winding up for the next slap. It's visible on Stu Hamm's video where he explains flamenco styled double popping.
