fingering for symetrical scales

Sign in to disble this ad
hello.

I have recently begun practicing the whole/half tone and half/whole tone scales, in order to play them over dimminished chords and 7 chords. I have been used to practicing pentatonic scales, the modes of the major and jazz minor scales, but having scales that have 8 notes in one octave instead of 7 is kinda weird to me. What are some helpful hints at getting around these scales with your fingers, and applying the harmony?
Thanks

For ascending on a half-whole scale, just go 1,2,3,4 (next string slide over one fret) 1,2,3,4 etc. Reverse it for descending and just skip the first note for the whole-half scale.

The scale is a useful place to start when working with minor ii-V's, but I think once you get the fingering down, it's better to think about the notes that are outside the more conventional chord as altered chord tones.

I like this fingering for the half-whole sym dim scale:

1-2-4-(slide1/2 step)4, go up one string and keep repeating.
