ok this a noob question i know but my friend is a drummer and he invited me to jam with him this weekend, so how close is too close in following the drummer's beat at least on songs i dont know?

I'm not too sure why you're even pondering the definition of 'too close'. Play intuitively and listen to your gutfeel. You'll know what's right and what's not.
