Free jamming funky music

My band told me that during our cover of Wild Cherrys' "Play That Funky Music" they want to go from one of the verses to a free jam led by the bass and it doing some "fancy stuff", I presume they are also wanting some building blocks for a guitar solo or three.

So far I've played around with some pentantonic movements over the same position (5th - 7th fret on all 4 strings) which is OK, mixed them up with some hammer on/pull off combo's etc. Then went to G on E and tried exploring there a bit. Same kind of stuff and the odd off note

I'm checking some theory on the net. Would anyone have some advice on improvising this song?

Thanks
