Fretless 4 to Fretless 6. Advice?

Sign in to disble this ad
So yesterday I got my first 6 String, which is a fretless (pics soon ) and it's an absolutely fabulous instrument. Very good for only £139, I must say.

I've been playing Fretless on a 4 String on a Stagg BC300 for a year and I thought I'd jump straight to 6, just for the hell of it.

But what's really thrown me is the fact that there are no side dots or fret markings anywhere and I'm kind of semi guessing biggish changes in position and constantly checking intonation.

Any tips or advice on how to become totally comfortable with this new instrument?

Thanks.

No SIDE DOTS? Well, if you don't mind, I would suggest to put small pieces of tape at where the side dots would be. Once you get used to the bass, you can take the tape off. That's what I usually do on my cello.

Also, try comparing fretted notes to open strings to get your intonation together.

It's just gonna require a lot of ear training and practice, IMO. No shortcuts for getting that together.

Unless you put tape as fret dots, ha! Sorry

Yeah, true enough! I've never seen a fretless that didn't at least have dots as a guide. Weird.

ive never seen a frettless either without side dots if unlined... ive seen without side dots with lines...

but for 129 quid... it may be too much to put some refferance points...
