Funk and Groove without slap?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm primarily a rock player, but have been getting more and more into Funk and Groove styles. The thing is, I don't slap and at this point I'm not really interested in it. Are there any good tunes/bands that don't have too much slap?

+1 Jamerson (most old motown hits), Duck Dunn (booker t & the Mgs, Blue Bros band), and George Porter JR (Meters)

also check out Sharon Jones The Dap Kings, for an awesome contemporary revival of the old school dirty funk thing...

But first, and for most, James Jamerson. plenty to google on you tube.

Most funk has no slap bass.

I would go out on a limb and say slap is the exception rather than the rule in funk/r&b.

James Brown, P-Funk, Herbie Hancock, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, The Meters--there's some tasty fingerstyle playing!

+1 for Rocco Prestia of Tower of Power

I'll also say Dwight White. He plays some mean grooves on some of that old Lou Rawls music on Live at the Century.

James Jamerson is as funky as anyone! And Duck Dunn who was also mentioned is killing it!

Medeski, Martin, & Wood. Herbie Hancock with Paul Jackson (!!!). The Meters. Really can't go wrong with anything suggested so far.

Funk is a genre, slap is a playing style. They can go together but don't have to. Prime example are Jamerson & Dunn.

Definitely Rocco & T.O.P.... definitely!!!

Also, check out Paul Jackson... esp. his work with Headhunters.

Not necessarily "funk" players as such, but can get very funky in pretty much the same way:

Jaco and Michael Manring.

Umm...how about Jaco? The Chicken, Come On Come Over, etc. Pretty hardcore finger funk. Also Jerry Jemmot with King Curtis, BB King, etc. Jerry can lay it down.

Not all the time...I would say the vast majority of his stuff is fingers & not pick.
Jackson is more known for being a NON-Slap/Pop voice (of reason).
