Bootsy Collins Funk University - Online Bass Guitar School
I see a lot of big names as teachers so I wanted to hear from students that are already registered.
Is anyone here a registered student? If so, can you please tell me, are the lessons any good? Is the format working? What else can you tell someone who is thinking of registering?
Thanks in advance.

This is cool! Judging by the teachers, I'd say that the lessons will most likely benefit you greatly. Lessons from Wooten, Claypool, Bootsy... that's all I need to hear.

From what I can see is they have added more content than was on there about a year ago ... the linked thread is old and not too long after the launch.

is it worth it now is the question...

i jumped on there (after paying) cause I had the same questions. Awesome "faculty" seems pretty enticing (including some of my favorite players), but really all it is is a collection of videos of players. There is no real curriculum or any guide at all as to how to navigate the info. There is no organization or progression to it at all (other than chronologically by posting date).

Most of the videos seem to have been filmed at one time and later edited to split them into smaller segments.

There are videos of people talking about funk, about the one, about grooving, etc, but there is really very little concrete info on the actual techniques. There's not really any academic musical info, whether about things unique to funk or otherwise, and most of the demo videos are played at a very high level without explanation as to what we are seeing or how to practice or use it.

I farted around on it for a few hours and then cancelled my account. FWIW the guy that runs the site called my house and we talked about my impressions. Cool enough for sure, but ultimately we decided that the site wasn't for me. For all of the academic pretense, there's not a whole lot of "there" there. You really gotta dig to separate the chaff.

My experience was about 4 months ago, so if they've made any changes since then, all the better for them, but based on my very amicable call, it didn't sound like they were in any hurry to change all that. More of a kind of, "different strokes" kinda attitude.

I had a similar experience to Mesa, though I'll caveat that by saying that it was the first month.
I would add that, if you are a very self-disciplined learner, there is a good material to be had there. But you have to drive your own progress.
But I would also add that, if you are a very self-disciplined learner, there is equally good material available on YouTube, not much more difficult to find, and available for free.

I think learning on your own via books and or internet is good, but no matter how much you get from it there's one thing it can't provide no matter how experienced the instructor, and that's the opportunity to ask questions. It's a great resource but I think that's an important and invariable aspect of the media that should be factored in before making the purchase. No matter how good the info, you're on your own.

Very true. I thought there will be some interactive learning like a live cam or webinar of some sort. if that's not the way the curriculum is set, I can assume that they won't provide me with something that is much more valueable then YouTube . I do like the t- shirts though.

YouTube's a pretty valuable resource. Especially for the price. If you want a good dvd instruction course, I'm currently working my way through Roy Vogt's Teach Me Bass Guitar and I feel it's very much worth the price I paid for it. Like I said, you can't ask questions, but it's laid out very logically in a way that encourages learning. I'm enjoying it quite a bit.

i paid for 1 month last spring out of curiousity....it's kinda cool, some of it quite goofy and they could stand to spend more on the video recording....

but ...i must say, to keep up with it you would really have to appy yourself if you wanna get everything down that is available in the tabs....
