General question regarding Lessons

Sign in to disble this ad
Good day all,

Would It matter if i took guitar lessons if i plan on playing bass? Could I learn the theory from taking guitar and then simply apply it to the confines of the bass instrument? I like playing bass but I feel like i could learn more by taking guitar lessons. Any suggestions would be much recommended.

if you wanna learn bass take bass lessons...

but to answer your question, the theory could be applied to a bass to an extent, there would be areas which could not be applied and others areas which might not even be covered at all, but yea i guess.

learn more in what way? You will probably learn more in guitar lessons about guitar but less about bass..

It sounds to me like you are approaching the bass on the assumption that it's a four string guitar. That's kind of like approaching the guitar as a six string banjo, to put it in context.

Your a novice on the bass so why would a guitar give you an "edge"!!! If you want to learn two instruments at the same time the piano is the only logical one. It captures the bass line, rythmn ingrediant, lead extension. It is the best solo instrument to learn and if your accomplished you'll have musicians wanting you to work with them. However I can say the same thing for a solid bassists, first off they don't grow on trees and to find one with multiple skills in techniques and have the ability to wear many hats is very rare. 'Do you know what every note on your fret board is, everyone without hesitation? In a 5 pc. band if the guitar player or piano is abit weak you can still get by to a degree, if the bass player is weak the BAND is weak, simple as that. Keep learning. Doc

I've always played rhythm guitar..learning chords and singing along with tunes.

Comes in handy with family sing-a-longs and such. Also you can lay tunes for a band. No downside to that.

I suggest picking a decent acoustic guitar and having fun with it. Some chord books or online chord sites/lyrics sites can move things along.

PS. Spend most of your time on the bass if that's what you want to get proficient at.

Its just my opinion, and I am extremely bias, not everyone can lay a good BASS grove down.
Guitar will teach you chords, but not necessarily how they relate to playing Bass..if you want to learn Bass you need to play Bass, if you want to learn to play the Piano you have to play Piano (or keyboard w/e..) as mentioned keyboard -as I have recently found- is a great gateway to translating "Music" when you apply it to another instrument. specefically bass in my case.
To stay on topic; guitar lessons for guitar, Bass lessons for Bass. they are not the same thing.
Iam curious as to how you think this plan will pay off? l just wondering why you think it may..

I've played guitar, sax (soprano), bass, clarinet (well almost) and keys. All have helped my bass playing. But, I have learned them all one at a time. Learning multiple instruments helps you learn to hear what others are doing, hear pitch from very low to very high and how what you do fits in the mix.
