Going up the Neck and looking Straight ahead

Sign in to disble this ad
When I'm sight reading I find myself having to look down at the neck when I go up to high notes, which makes me stumble because I lose my place while reading the music. I've heard from a past teacher that whatever posture you have keep that posture and use peripheral vision to hit the right note while going up the neck to play those high notes.

Does anyone know some good practices to do that would help with that

or just keep reading more music?

maybe I should lower my stand so that it helps with me looking towards the neck of the bass better?

Look up DB shifting exercises.. they are sometimes called vomit exercises... they work for BG too. the trick is to not look at the neck while doing them

Draw the curtains, turn out the lights. Play simple stuff like intervals up and down the neck. Suggestion by Steve Bailey (check him out). Make corrections BY EAR only. Watching the fretboard is a BAD HABIT.

Cool thanks for the replies
It just seem especially tough when you are playing a fretted instrument, you can't make those small adjustments to correct yourself. I use to play trombone and didn't have a problem staying in tune, although there are only 7 positions and they are right in front of you.
