Good and Bad Phrasing... What is it? How to practice it! Lesson with Scott Devine

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Guys here's part one of a tutorial I've just filmed. I'm discussing what good and bad phrasing is within a soloing context, something that I believe really isn't discussed enough, as it really is an essential tool within any vocabulary.

Apologies about the lighting (the dark to light effect), waiting for Kodak to post out a replacement camera!

Here it is... YouTube - ‪Jazz Phrasing Lesson Pt1 - Bass lesson with Scott Devine‬‏

as always, any questions fire away!

Easy,

Scott.

Hey Scott! Loved the lesson.

Gotta say man - I liked the 'bad phrasing' example too!

sick ... keep em coming. The breathe idea is good. When it comes to phrasing, you just feel like telling someone "quit wanking and feel it!"

Not easy to explain good phrasing, but you did a nice job. I notice that when you did the bad phrasing at the beginning that you were running a lot of scales, and when you did good phrasing you were way more chromatic. Was that by design?

BTW, the story goes that Arthur Kane, the late bassist for the 70's NYC band the New York Dolls, would also play like that where he'd take a deep breath, play a few notes until he ran out of air, then stop and breathe again for the next burst of notes. Of course, he did it because he wasn't very good Never thought of doing that while soloing, though. Good idea.

Bring on lesson two brother! I need help picking notes. I can hear the phrases in my head, I just don't know how to play them. Scales, chord tones, modes. So confused. What's my guiding model?

Great lesson as always Scott, I've gotten scales, modes and arpeggios down quite well due to your lessons, but I struggle with coming up with cool soloing/bassline ideas to brings them alive.

So a lesson on phrasing scales and arpeggio runs would be great!

Stoob, that's my problem too. Intellectually, I understand scales and appregios. Buy how do you apply them to improvising over a chord progression?

C'mon Scott, your baby chicks are hungry. Feed us!

Stoob/dogbluedrummer... Great suggestions guys! I think some tune analysis type tutorials would really help you with these questions. I'll discuss the structure of the tune and then talk about how to actually apply arpeggio's and scales to it. - By doing that you'll be able to see a practical application of what i'm talking about. So... watch this space!

IncX... Cheers man! Spread the word!!

Easy guys,

Scott.

Ok, nothing to do with this thread... well hopefully the phrasing's ok lol!

Over the last few months I've been listening to a lot of solo guitar stuff and it's really inspired me to try and do something similar on bass. I've got so into it that i'm planning on recording and releasing an EP that will be made up entirely of solo arrangements of standards for the bass.

This morning I was trying to plan out an arrangement of Autumn Leaves. Pretty much all of it's improvised although I did have an idea of the substitute chords I was going to try and throw in. I put a bit down on video but haven't recorded the entire arrangement... wanna keep it for the EP lol!

Anyhoooo, here it is, hope you like it...
