Good Training Bass

I live in the middle of nowhere, not a music store within 100 miles to get some hands-on advice so I'll put it up here. No experience with bass but a very strong desire to learn. Funds are always in question... what would make a decent starter setup for me? can email me directly if you want. Thanks for your imput.
