I saw Ron Carter and Jim Hall at a dumpy club, there were two shows scheduled. About 13 people showed up. They played there butts off, ended the first show, told everyone they could stay for the second, and once again played like they meant it, for 13 people They weren't even obligated to play to.

Lesson learned.

Thank you for posting this! Rich was a mentor and a teacher to me and I had the pleasure of playing in the 3 o'clock band under his direction at North Texas State. This brings back some good memories.
