there is a funk 101 thread that is awesome.

some new stuff I did is the Bamboos, the New Mastersounds, and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. Atlanta band Cadillac Jones is also on pandora quite a bit for me.

I actually played on one of the tracks from the New Mastersounds remix album - they do indeed have some cool stuff. For the transcribing - are you thinking specifically bass or other instruments as well? For bass, I would start with some of the James Brown stuff that Bootsy played on: "Get Up (I Feel Like Being A Sex Machine)", "Soul Power", "Give It Up Or Turnit A Loose" (the six minute remake) and "Talkin' Loud And Saying Nothing". For slap, Graham Central Station's "Pow" and "Hair". You might also want to check out some stuff like Pleasure ("Joyous" or "Glide") and The Crusaders ("Keep That Same Old Feeling").

I saw an interview with George Clinton...he said when Bootsy left Brown and joined him he brought the ONE, man everything changed. Everybody knows where ONE is....hit it hard. Funk is heavily accented on the ONE....ie Sly Stone, James Brown, Bootsy. ||: BOOM laka laka laka :||...... see what I mean? Peace

I've been doing that joke on TB for, I don't know, maybe 8 or 9 years now. I think that's the first time that somebody got it.

Awesome.

+1 on the mastersounds, Sharon jones, the bamboos and Paul jackson. Obviously George Porter with the meters is a good one. Also, as previously stated, pandora is a great way to get turned on to some new stuff. My "meters radio" has spawned endless hours of transcribing. Check out papa grows funk also, those guys kill it.

+1 to Paul Jackson. Listening to him has probably changed my playing (especially funk) more than any other bassist. Check out these tracks.
