In the more hard rock genre, check out Dan Maines from Clutch, very tasty rock grooves, and hell of overdriven tone.

I don't know that I would include Paul Jackson in a group of simple groovers; I think his style is way more complicated than that.

Less funky, but still awesome - Randy Meisner from the Eagles. Great lines - simple but still plenty of stuff going on and really fit the songs nicely as well.

+1 for Paul Denman - he can groove like a mother-you-know-whater.

Grooves like Jamerson, but simpler = Duck Dunn.
In some ways his lines are more valuable for study because of their economy
Get thee to some old Staxx records. I Recommend Booker T & the MG's Doin' Our Thing

Great P sound, his grooves are technically simple but very interesting in rhythm patterns.
Listen to the Meters (everything!), and to "Desitively Bonnaroo" by Dr. John.

bskts247: If I understood you correctly, I think the players mentioned in this thread DO stand out in the mix. And not just from "flash". Couple more to add: Bob Babbitt, Carol Kaye, Joe Osborne, Otiel Burbridge, Roscoe Beck, Gordon Edwards, Francis Rocco Prestia, Carl Radle.

Depending on the recording = Anthony Jackson.

I don't know if this name was mentioned, but Pino Pallidino, easily one of the groovest, bassist out. He's was outstanding in D'angelo's Voodoo album. He's also done, John Mayer, The Who, etc. etc. etc

John Paul Jones had lots of lines that rock hard with a deep groove!

Two that always stand out for me are Ramble On (Led Zeppelin II) and Celebration Day (Led Zeppelin III).

And some of his lines are really hard to play (trying to learn Immigrant Song, but some parts I just can't move my fingers that fast yet!), but I learned Celebration Day so it can't be that hard.

Can't forget the Lemon Song.

I'm surprised that Rocco Prestia hasn't been mentioned. I would say his sense of funk groove and 16th note rhythm is highly simple, but rhythmically very advanced. Not a at all flash player. Check out the song "Page One" by Tower Of Power, just outstanding!

Someone did mention him on the first page somewhere. Well, they said "Francis Rocco Prestia" and I assume it's the same person.

I totally agree with your sentiments! Don't know much of his work, but every time I hear Tower of Power I really dig it.

Not so funky, but Bruce Thomas is killer. I don't recall if any one said Graham Maby, but he's one of my favorites
