Question Guitar suitable for Doom Metal?

Sign in to disble this ad
Didn't know where else to put this, and sorry if I screwed up. The topic is explanatory, so I just need some suggestions on where to start with Doom Metal.

This. Now if you want to know a good BASS guitar for doom metal, you're in the right place.

Also, which subgenre are you playing? Traditional? Epic? Stoner? Sludge? Funeral? Drone? Death?

Sorry, I have a bad habit of just saying "guitar" instead of "bass." Sludge is going to be the main subgenre.

To be honest, your amp and possibly your effects are going to be a lot more important than your bass. You probably want something thick, with a food fundamental sound, and I don't think you can go wrong with a p-bass for that.

I would go with any 35" scale bass you can afford. I would invest in good amps, cabs, and effects.

you want a guitar that can handle the low tuning and have tons of sustain. Aluminum neck Kramers or Travis Beans are the way to go, but can cost some $$ and are really hard to find. Les Pauls are the standard option, but SG's have a monstrous tone.

IMO, stay away from active pickups.. A couple of people here at my music college have esp's etc with emg's, and when they are asked to play pink floyd or led zeppelin they sound like dung.
Ibanez makes good guitars, ot as good as their basses, but still very nice.
If you have a tiny bit more money to spend you might want to consider PRS or Mayones?
