Playing any instrument - guitar or other - will help you on bass. I get a lot of comments from the "hornlike" lyrical qualities I use when playing. What many don't know is that I took about a year of private lessons from a saxophone instructor (yeah, I played bass in them) in order to better understand phrasing (something that we don't necessarily think about).

If you're gonna play another instrument I'd say play keys. You have the full range plus the benefit of theory making a lot more sense. I played guitar for 10 years before picking up a bass, play bass exclusively now. I've played other instruments too, in later life I've decided not to double. Concentration is exclusively bass now. But it is a good idea, play a harmonic instrument and then learn drums or percussion too.
