Uhh, yeah... When i started playing my bass a couple months ago, i don't exactly know how... but started using my thumb as a full time pick. Other than my index fingernail(cuz it sounds kinda cool). But, is that like one of those things that make you hit a ceiling REALLY fast? And should i just learn a new technique?? HELP!!
At some point you should learn all techniques. There is something to learn from them all and give you lots of tonal options.

Have you tried going up and down with your thumb? If you can do it that is called double thumbing wich is a cool technique. Me personally Im a finger jogger.
For the most part, starting out using just your thumb won't hold you back. The next step would be to start adding your other fingers into the mix.
If you're trying to exactly mimic the sound or lines of other players, you might have problems because they don't play the way you do. But I'd view the thumb as one technique you've got down and you can add to. That's never a bad thing.
I think I heard that the bassist for The Marshall Tucker Band played as you described, basically using his thumb as a pick.
There are some great full-color beginner books that have clear photographs of positions for left and right hands, and begin to illustrate the fingerboard and music notation. You might want to pick one up.
Thanks, that's is one upside!
Cool, i viewed it as a HUGE problem, but i felt like asking.
Did the bassist for the MST really play with his thumb!? PIMP!
