The Harmonic Minor Scale and creating runs. (guitar)

So Im playin my beloved Dean MLX and Im trying to get this harmonic minor scale down. It gives me that classical kind of sound I really want. Ive messed with the Natural Minor forever and I thought it was what I needed, but it was a little off. So tonight I was messing on youtube, and I found this Video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YDReqX5FVk

Thats the scale I need, but Im not good enough on my theory to catch all of what he is saying. He says a finguring pattern in the middle of the video like
1 3 4
1 3 4
2 3
I think he shifts down a fret here
1 2 4
2 3
1 2 4
Did I get the shift right, and the fingerings correct thats my first question. My next question is how do I construct a run out of this scale and also out of the Major pentatonic scale. I dont understand theory well enough to figure it out, so please dumb it down for me. THNX.

The leftmost string is the low E and the top line is the lowest fret. Obviously these fingerings are for guitar (two extra strings) but you can ignore those.
