Harmonic Tuning

Ive been looking for a thread about this but either i overlooked it or there isnt one...

My friend tunes his bass by using harmonics ( i cant describe it any better )

I cannot ask him about it cos hes the otherside of the county.

Anyone tell me how this is done please?

The fifth fret harmonic on a given string is the same note as the seventh fret harmonic on the next string up.

For me harmonic tuning is for fine tuning and tuning the instrument with itself. I will tune the strings to whatever is required the piano at the gig, or tuner, or ??? Then will use harmonics like Lemur821 described to fine tune.

I also like to use harmonics to tune in noisy setting the higher pitch is easier for me to hear.

and I can hear the beats better on the higher pitches.
