Sign in to disble this ad
OK, so I know

D7 = D - F# - A - C

is b9 an Eb?

does this b9 substitute for the 3

D7(b9) = D - Eb - A - C

THANKS

D7 (b9) = D F# A C Eb

You don't replace the 3rd with the b9, you add the b9 to the chord.

You can think of it this way too - on top of the root (D) you've got a diminished 7th chord - F# A C Eb - many modulation possibilities from that.....

Correct, if you look at it in root position and using the major scale:

1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 (1 as root and 8 as octave)

At the Octave (D) the scale would start over again, and the 9 would = a 2nd an octave above, ect.

if you were to play the Eb against the F# down in the same octave it would not sound to good, but add that b9 an octave above, now you have a nice color tone. Voicing makes a huge difference when it comes to tonality.

Yes, the Eb would be correct. No, it doesn't replace the third.

The primary chord voicing would be D-F#-A-C-Eb.
