| | | | Help with finding appropriate basslines

Dear bass players
Our band is in the middle of recording a song, which we would like to complete soon. But we are having some problems finding the harmony between the rythm of the drums and the rythm guitar.
Main problem is that nobody of us really has any experience in how to play the bass properly and would like to seek experience from others. We don't really know if the bassline always has to punctuate with the bass drum or if it has to be similar to the rythm guitar.
Because this forum seems to be giving a lot of tips to newbies, we would appreciate your help.
So what we did: We have made a cut demo of one of our songs (just the important parts) without the bassline: http://rapidshare.com/files/32812879...xdown-demo.mp3
So following our questions to the song:
0:21 - 0:33:
How would you play this part? Would you just accent the bassdrum here? (seemed reasonable to us)
0:33 - 0:56:
The palm mutes of the guitar and the bassdrum are not coherent. So which instrument do you follow? Should the bass play the same rythm of the guitar 1 to 1?
0:56 - 1:19:
We have the same problem here. The beat gets a bit abstract. Here the bass should be a connector between guitars and bass. How do we accomplish this?
1:19 - End:
Just accent the bassdrum with the base note on the bassdrum or would you try to find an seperate bass harmony?
We are thankful for any tips given.
If someone of you is ambitious enough to make a file-sample of some basslines, we would be endlessly thankful.
Regards

For example, the guitars come in at a higher tempo (maybe on purpose?) and it takes few bars until the drummer catches up. In that situation, I'd think of Cliff Williams and just pump out a steady stream of eights that will help your bandmates keep time. Quote:

To sum up, I'd try to keep everything as simple as possible, and concentrate on keeping rock-solid time, which is easy to say, but not so easy to do.

In this cut version it sounds bad. And there are other timing problems, which have to be fixed. What should the bass do on the palm mutes and on ghost notes? I Quote:

| | | Well, thanks again for your help.
I think we could use a lot of information from this forum, so we keeped working at it for a few weeks.
We actually liked the result that much, that we decided to make a video clip of it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ozM_zRmJuU
Comments always welcome!

One nitpick: the hi-hats/rides cut through the mix too much.

I like the basslines in the Youtube video. Nice and simple, solid, great tone, matches up with the kick etc.
My band also does our own recording, mixing and whatnot and I know how much work goes into it.
I will definitely be checking out your Myspace for more tracks.
Cheers

We've been using one of those Korg 1600 studio in a box things for tracking and mixing...for what it is I think we got a pretty decent demo quality thing going on.
We also are trying Cubase now and very soon I'm going to procure a firewire interface to try that instead.
What do you guys use?
