Get down to basics. Get a copy of Best Of The Meters and get your groove on.

Play a lot of everything. Don't specialize in specific things. Versatility is where improvement happens and will end up making you better at playing the things you have the most interest in playing.

Sighh...
You'll come around one day.

anyway, for something a little faster, grab ANYTHING by James Jamerson.
THAT is some challenging stuff.

Also, get some Steely Dan happening. Kid Charlemagne for example has a RIPPING bass line!!

scales and excersizes are all over BUT
a quicker actual "song" for fast fingers?

go look at about 3/4 of my youtube videos, that will give you an idea of "fast-fingered" songs....OR anyone here that has videos posted who are playing extreme or fast songs.

choose something, and practice.....

Get some Jaco stuff like Teen Town or The Dry Cleaner from Des Moines
That will put you in for some woodshed time.
It might not be fast enough for you but it will give a lesson to your left and right hand.

You're still a beginner - things like Steely Dan and Jaco are going to drive you nuts if you ask me.

This thread has tons of good ideas: SIMPLE bass lines that make the song...

Also, there are several threads right here on this site that are instructional for bass. Go check 'em out.

+1 to Motown and Steely Dan songs. Not super-advanced like Jaco, but very groovy bass lines.

Actually, I'd hit the books. I'm in a rut in terms of progression and have gone back to Ed Friedland's Bass Method Complete Edition (Books 1, 2, 3) by Hal Leonard. Go Amazon it. I end each lesson with 10 mins of running up and down each of the 4 strings faster and faster and then end off by just randomly jumping around frets and strings with the aim of getting a clear note. I find it helps my left hand speed.

Not familiar with that track but I was working on "green earrings" the other week... talk about 16th notes.

I couldn't agree more, yeah sleep now in the fire is challenging and its about as hard as most mainstream bass lines get, but just cause you can play one RATM song doesn't mean you have his style down, or comprehended. PLAY A LOT FROM DIFFERENT GENRES!

The reason rock bassists like Timmy C are good is because they studied bass outside of rock. I remember reading that Timmy was Jazz trained, and his lines are certainly funky. Also look at the other big rock bassists like flea for instance, his style is very funky (if you are looking for something challenging pickup the bass book to "blood sugar sex magic" and kiss the next 2 months of your life goodbye).

The only way to truly understand a genre is to understand a few other genres.

+1 to the meters, most old school funk is great for your level.

You want a bass standard that will push you try "Sir Duke" by Stevie Wonder....the solo will keep you busy for awhile, and the rest of the song will expose you to the fundamentals of a groovy bass line, and how to build a bass line to be more complex.

PS. Don't worry about your speed, it comes in time, be more worried about understanding what you are playing. I spent a long time learning to play hard stuff...countless nights trying to play some solo, or something like portrait of tracy...and it was all pretty useless, time much better spent learning 10 simple songs that expose me to new rhythms, chord progressions and music to listen to.

What album is it on? I don't have that song

Yeah I mentioned to my instructor how much I dug Steely Dan and he happened to have 2 songs one of which was "green earrings" which kicked my butt...Then I mentioned how much I dug "Josie" I have to transcribe it for next Wednesday...I really have to get cracking at that.

BTW that is awesome that you guys have a SD ensemble, my college barely had a music department.

"Green Earrings" is one of my fav songs by SD. Btw, Kid Charlemagne is the first song on the same album, Royal Scam. Great one. There's also a song called "The Fez" on that album that has a pretty simple but nice repetitive bass line that could be a good exercise for the OP as well.
