Question Help me pick out assessment pieces...

Sign in to disble this ad
Ok lads and ladies, I'm doing VCE Solo Performance here in Australia, i dont know any equivalents in other countries, maybe jst call it kindergarten for Music College. Im looking for 3 pieces to learn for my assesment and i dont know what to choose!

they need to be of contrasting styles and the total time has to be under 10 minutes. im thinking a rock/metal piece, a funk piece and a classical piece, maybe like a cello suite or a menuette.

im racking my brains for ideas but i cant choose! please post any ideas and if any of you could upload backing tracks or stuff like that that would veryyyyy much be appreciated.

thx

Are you allowed any kind of accompaniment? If so what? Could you play along with a recording of Abersole's or Band in a Box?

Cello suites sound good. Most people pick on the 1st Suite the Prelude movement, but the Minuets from the 1st suite are very pretty too, will show some technique and musicianship not show by jazz or metal, and not as difficult.

Question answers

yes i am allowed accompaniment, coz comon lets fact it basslines can sound pretty borin by themselves. I have a very able drummer and a few good guitarists up my sleeve so any of them would be useful.

but only 1 accompanist per song.

i was thinking of doing aeroplane by RHCP bcoz im a bit of slap enthusiast and its a fairly well known piece for the masses.

finding a hard rock/metal featuring bass is hard to find. i was thinking Orion by Metallica but tis too long as it doesnt fit the time criteria.

besides that i dunno.

hmmm shouldn't you have chosen these by now? Am a school music teacher and private tutor so some advice. Whatever you play couple of things you need to do.
1. Make it dynamically interesting, be articulate
2. Be in charge, from tuning to end of performance (balance sounds etc)
3.Choose something that is entertaining to listen to.
People who mark these things listen to a lot of them, and not to be discouraging, but Aeroplane is very very common. Melody on the bass always impresses (when done properly). Contunuum by Jaco is a piece you should be able to get down by then and it has a lot of opportunities for expressive playing. I have a student doing this as part of a jaco medley. A student I had one year played Stevie Wonders Sir duke as one of his, he got top marks in the region. Whatever you play try to make it something you enjoy. Bachs prelude is a good classical piece, there is a transcription on picks place. lucaspickford.com. Any other questions let me know. Good luck.
